UPCDC PHILOSOPHY

ON CHILDREN

Every child is unique, whose thoughts, feelings, and pre-dispositions are valued. Children develop and learn through the dynamic interplay of the different domains of development - the physical, motor, psycho-socio-emotional, and cognitive. Children are not passive recipients but active participants in their development.

ON LEARNING

Young children naturally learn through play, through hands-on experiences and manipulation of various materials with the use of their senses. They learn through their interaction with their natural/physical environment, with their peers and adults of their immediate environment. Beyond transmission of knowledge, real learning is viewed as a construction (from within) and reconstruction of knowledge from past experiences.

ON THE TEACHER's ROLE

The UPCDC teacher is a facilitator of learning who understands and respects the individuality of each child. The progressive preschool teacher structures and manages a learning environment where children are free to explore and manipulate materials, even interact with their peers spontaneously. Using the Integrated Core Curriculum, the teacher plans developmentally appropriate and relevant activities that allow children to actively participate, gaining more learning experiences in the process. The teacher also knows each child individually, monitors and assesses their development regularly. For sustainability of gains and from an ecological and long-term perspective, the teacher nurtures strong partnership with the home and community to which the child belongs.

ON THE ROLE OF THE PRESCHOOL

The preschool is a safe, secure, and stimulating environment where children can be children. The school promotes the involvement of families and the communities as partners in enhancing children's welfare and development.

THE UPCDC APPROACH

The UP Child Development Center utilizes the progressive developmental-interaction approach. This perspective is anchored on various developmental, ecological, and progressive education theories such as those of John Dewey, Jerome Bruner, Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, Erik Erikson, and Urie Bronfenbrenner. It is characterized by the following:

  • child-focused, giving primary importance to or emphasis on the development of the child, on process over rote learning of concepts and/or subject matter
  • provision of various simple, rich learning experiences where play is encouraged and utilized, since it is the most natural way by which children relate with their environment
  • developmentally appropriate learning materials in a decentralized classroom environment
  • utilization of the Integrated Core Curriculum with learning activities that allows experimentation, play, discovery, questions, and collaboration
  • regular and holistic assessment of children using the UPCDC Assessment Tool through the revised clinical method
